ORIGIN:
United States. They are found mainly on the island of Assateague and on the neighboring island of Chincoteague, off the coast of Maryland and Virginia.
CHARACTERISTCS:
Small in height with an average of about 12 hands or 48 inches, although they retain some horse like characteristics especially about the head. A tough, hardy breed they are compact and the legs tend to be sturdy and strong.
BREED PROFILE:
Mystery surrounds this feral breed. Some suggest that they are descendants of horses that survived a shipwreck during the 16th century and swam ashore to the islands. Others suggest that they were the result of horses that escaped from early settlers or were even brought out to the islands by these settlers to escape taxes on them. Today these ponies are managed by the Chincoteague Fire Dept. and every year they are rounded up and some are auctioned off to the public.
